The professional guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. to begin the adventure heading south of Cusco. The journey is made by tourist transportation and lasts approximately 4 and a half hours, heading toward the Layo district, in the province of Canas.
During the journey, temperatures are usually cold (between 5°C and 9°C), so it is recommended to bring a warm jacket, gloves, hat, and scarf. After about 2 hours of travel, there will be a stop in the town of Cusipata, where a local breakfast will be served. You will also have time to purchase snacks, water, or any last-minute items you may have forgotten.
After breakfast, the trip continues to the starting point of the hike. From there, the route to Pallay Punchu Mountain begins, with an approximate hiking time of 1 hour. The trail is steep and uphill, surrounded by colorful hills and high-Andean landscapes where it is common to see llamas and alpacas grazing.
Upon reaching the main viewpoint, you will be amazed by the natural colorful stripes that shape this impressive mountain, also known as the “Andean Poncho of the Apus”. From the summit, you can also admire the breathtaking views of the Langui–Layo Lagoon, one of the largest lagoons in southern Cusco.
After free time to take photos and enjoy the scenery, the descent begins back to the starting point, where the transportation will be waiting. Then, you will head to Raqchi, an impressive archaeological site that you will visit with your guide. Afterwards, the journey continues to Cusipata, where you will enjoy a buffet lunch to recharge your energy.
Finally, the return to the city of Cusco will be between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., arriving with unforgettable memories of this experience at one of the most colorful mountains in Peru. The tour ends one block from Cusco’s Main Square.
